6 Tips to Make Your Home Office Space More Productive
Working from home has its advantages as well as challenges. While the comforts of working from home cannot be denied, the challenges of remaining focused and productive and minimizing distractions are very real. Organizing your Home Office Space such that it maximizes your effectiveness is the key to higher productivity. Since you are working all by yourself, you will need to focus on keeping yourself in a positive frame of mind as well.
1. Demarcate work area from personal space. The biggest challenge for people working from home is to separate their work space from their personal space. These areas are bound to overlap since you are working AT home. However, a certain discipline needs to be incorporated into one’s work life so that neither office nor personal life is disturbed.
Remove all distractions in the form of game consoles, televisions, iPods, or radios. This will help you focus on the work at hand and ensure that you get through the day without a hitch. Create a space wherein only work happens and ensure that this does not spill over to other areas shared by you and your family. Dividing physical space can have repercussions on your psychology as well.
In your workspace, ensure that everything you need is close at hand. You do not want to be fumbling about for pen and paper just when you have a unique idea or you need to take down notes in a hurry over a telephonic call. Staying organized helps get work done faster and with much less frustration.
Keep filing cabinets, files, and work-related documents and papers near your workspace. This will prevent a pile up of work that you kept aside for later and keep you up-to-date with your work.
2. Get a comfortable chair. Never underestimate the importance of a comfortable chair. If your work entails sitting all day, it is essential that you spend some time choosing a comfortable chair that will provide your back, waist, and shoulders with the support that you need. Improper seating or a badly positioned chair can lead to back pain that can adversely affect your mood as well as productivity. Ensure that your desk compliments your chair in terms of height so that your arms and neck are not strained while working.
3. Install good lighting. They type of lighting installed at your workplace affects your productivity and mood. If possible, locate your workspace near the windows to allow as much natural light to enter as possible. During winters, you tend to feel lazy due to the lack of exposure to sunlight. Artificial light that mimics sunlight or specially designed lamps that look like natural light can help remove negativity and boost your mood. Daylight color balanced CFL lamps are good because they match the outside light and keep you alert. If your workspace does not get enough light, a table lamp could provide a solution.
4. Minimize extraneous sound. Outside sound can be very distracting when you are trying to concentrate on work. You can consider placing a rug on the floor to absorb sound and minimize echoes. You could also insulate the ceiling if you live in a block of flats and the house above you creates too much noise. If you want to cover up the sound of light conversation, you can play ambient music such as the sound of the ocean or the wind.
5. Keep your technology updated. Stay abreast of the latest technology and keep up with the latest software updates. Smoothly running laptops, printers, scanners, shredders and so on will make your life easier and cut down on the amount of frustration that you have during the day. Ensure that your Internet connection and telephone connection is reliable and meets your work needs adequately. Data loss and system crashes can cost you much more than you will spend on technology upgrades.
6. Pay attention to ergonomics. While you are working, your posture should be such that it places minimum strain on your body. Your arms should bend at the elbows at 90 degrees, so you should not need to reach up or down to type on your keyboard. Your wrists should not bend and your monitor should be placed in such a way that you do not have to tilt your head upwards or downwards to look at it.
