Everybody knows that the Earth is made up of various natural gases, which we, in turn, use for most of our activities. Crude oil is refined to produce gasoline or petrol, which we then use for powering our cars and other vehicles, among other machines and equipment. But there is actually a component of natural gas and crude oil which also has a variety of uses, both small and large: butane gas.
If you have ever flicked a lighter with your fingers, you would notice that the flame immediately ignites. Lighter fluid is one of the most common forms of butane that millions of people make use of every single day. Before we delve into its uses, it would be useful to know a bit about butane’s properties. The butane molecule is composed of 4 carbon atoms, which are then surrounded by 10 atoms of hydrogen. This combination forms a straight line, which is commonly referred to as n-butane.

One main advantage of butane mixed with propane is that, compared to other derivatives of natural gas, it does not release carbon monoxide. Butane only releases carbon dioxide as a waste product, which makes it less toxic to people and the environment.
Another distinct advantage of butane is that it is less expensive than propane. Aside from this, butane is actually more fuel-efficient than propane because it produces 12% more caloric energy than propane when used on a per-volume basis. In simple terms, this means that when using the same volume of each gas, butane would produce more energy with less effort. Also, when compared with petrol, butane actually gives 70% better endurance and efficiency.
At the end of the day, various refined gases each have their uses. Choosing what kind of fuel source to use really depends on your needs. As a combination of butane and propane, LPG works well for many applications inside the home and outside, as well as in industrial settings.
