Interior Design Tips: How to Choose Classy Sofas for Small Spaces
Interior Design Tips to Choose Classy Sofas-
Just because you have a small living room or lounge that does not mean that you have to be limited in your choice of sofas, too. You are not bound by law to stick to the popular 3-2-1 lounge combination, either. There are many more variations you can try out even for rooms with limited space for furniture.
In the last few decades, there has been a tendency of increasing popularity of urban living which has brought along a few significant effects. Perhaps the most notable of those effects is the decreasing of the average size of the residential homes. With the rising popularity of living in the city, modern homes tend to become smaller and smaller. And that has had an impact on furniture design as well. The modern furniture has to cater to this trend. Thankfully, furniture designers have recognized the need for furniture that would fit smaller spaces and have begun to develop scaled down pieces of furniture which are suitable for such smaller rooms, without compromising on their style, quality or functionality in the process.
There are now different types of sofas and other furnishings available, which have been designed to fit compact living areas and display similar design and functionality features – they usually have no armrests or just small ones, they often include chaise sections or are based on a modular design, they have exposed legs and lack the overly streamlined and bulk shape of the furniture designed for bigger living spaces, etc.
When you are furnishing a small room, you are generally advised to avoid overstuffed sofa designs, as they give out the impression of a much larger size than their actual one. It is also inadvisable to use sofas with too deep seating as these tend to take up a lot of space in the room.
Another big “no” are the sofas with bold patterns and prints, as they can easily overpower the space visually. Instead, you should choose furniture pieces with compact dimensions and prefer upholstery in uniform tones.
Here are a few aspects that you should consider when selecting a sofa for a smaller lounge or living room.
Visual Weight
The sofa design you choose should be visually lightweight. Some designs, even though they have compact measurements, look a lot bulkier than they actually are. Furniture pieces in lighter colors which have small legs will take up a lot less visual space as compared to dark furniture with box-shape design, for instance.
Neutral Colors are a Great Choice
Using furniture in light colors inspired by nature can make your small living room look larger than its actual size. Choosing a neutral palette and excluding bold hues from the décor will allow the eyes to roam across the room freely, which in turn will create an illusion of a much larger space. Light and soft colors are the best choice for achieving optimum spaciousness.
Why not try out a Different Option?
As we already stated, you are not bound to just the lounge suit consisting of a 3-seater, a 2-seater and an armchair. Instead you could use a sleek sofa with three seats complemented with two chairs in a compact design. This way, you will still be able to seat five people, but you will use the space much more efficiently.
Playing with Proportions
The proportions of your room play a pivotal role for your interior décor and your choice of furniture. Your furnishings should correspond with the room’s proportions. For instance, in case you have a long, narrow living room, you should choose a long and narrow sofa for it. Alternatively, if your living room is short and wide, a corner sofa or a 2-seater would suit it much better.
Corner Sofas
Sectionals or corner sofas can be a great solution for living areas with an open plan. They have the ability to visually distinguish your kitchen from your living area, but at the same time not creating an excessive visual obstruction. This way, the space is kept airy and open, thus looking bigger than it is in reality.
In case you have a really small open plan area, a good choice would be a sectional with a chaise part – the chaise segment has no armrests or backrest, thus the visual weight of the sofa will be much lighter.
Motion Furniture
For long years, recliners have been considered aesthetically unattractive. However, this notion is no longer popular. In recent years, many popular furniture designers have come up with elegant recliners with streamlined designs which will not hamper the aesthetics of your home décor.
Apart from a recliner, you could also choose to use an incliner in your design. The major difference between these two types of furniture is that an incliner would move forward instead of backwards, when put into motion, and this allows you to place it just 7cm away from a wall. This can save you a lot of space and this is the exact reason why this type of furniture has been gaining popularity for decorating small rooms.
Ottomans
The ottoman is a very versatile furniture piece which can fit small spaces perfectly. If you choose a large ottoman covered with upholstery, you can not only use it for extra seating space, but it can also double up as a side table, a coffee table or a footrest as per the need.
Small spaces can be a challenge to decorate. However, that does not mean you don’t have different options for sofas and other furniture, if you have a small living room or lounge. Go through your options; consider your lifestyle and needs and you will surely find something suitable for your home interior.
