Let’s start with the age old method that everyone is very familiar with. Grab a chair or a blanket and lay out in the sun. Do you understand how this exactly works? Did you realize that you tan because your cells are actually trying to protect you from harmful UVA and UVB rays? Yes, it is UVA and UVB rays that cause cancer. And the longer you are exposed to these rays, the greater chance you have of getting cancer. The tan that you end up seeing on your skin is actually your body’s way of creating a shield from the radiation. Of course, in the process of doing so, your skin begins to look darker because your cells have been changed and yes we can even use the word damaged. That is why sunscreen was created. Sunblock uses chemicals in an attempt to block out the UV rays from the sun. Depending on how successful that block is or how high the SPF is, your skin will tan more or less. The higher the SPF number, the less UV rays are penetrating the skin. If you do decided to go the old fashioned way, never use a sunscreen with a SPF lower than 20. You want to make sure that you concentrate on protecting the areas most in contact with the sun like your shoulders, nose, face, arms and back. Stay out of the sun between the hours of 10:00 a.m. And 2:00 p.m. because the UV radiation is at its absolute peak. Tan in short increments of time to minimize the damage done to your skin. Never stay out tanning for longer than one hour. Some people choose to use what are called tanning oils in order to accelerate the process of the skin creating a shield. These oils intensify the UV rays from the sun and should be used only with great care and are really not recommended at all. The key is to start the tanning process in plenty of time to be ready for your wedding day.

Tanning beds have grown tremendously in popularity in recent years. Keep in mind that just because you will not be in the sun, that doesn’t mean that there are risks to using a bed. One of the great side benefits that visiting a tanning bed provides is the production of Vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D promotes bone health, reduces inflammation and supports the immune system and let’s face it, it just makes you feel good all over. It also can give you a nice tan if you follow a plan setup for you by a true professional. Speaking of which, you always want to make sure that the salon you go to is operated by trained professionals who will review your skin type and medical history. But again, you want to be aware that you are still exposing your skin to UVA rays. If the proper protections are not taken in such an environment, you could be exposing yourself to wrinkling, sagging and of course cancer. This can do the job, just make sure that it is done in a controlled way.

The third option we want to talk about is spray tanning. Many have turned away from the two options discussed below and have opted for spray tanning to get that beautiful golden glow. This form of tanning is where a fine mist is sprayed onto your body. There is an ingredient that reacts with your body chemistry to turn it bronze. Unlike the options above, it is completely safe. It is also extremely easy as you can go to a tanning salon and have them setup a booth for you. You can choose what shade you want to be and it dries very quickly. A spray tan generally lasts from 3 to 7 days so you will need to talk to the salon you choose to determine the absolute perfect timing to be ready for your big day. So, now you know about the three primary methods of achieving a tan for your special day. The choice you make is ultimately up to you, but at least now you can make an informed decision on which way to go.
